17th Street Canal

August 27, 2006, they are still working on the flood gates at the 17th Street canal. This is the dividing line between Jefferson Parish and Orleans Parish. It is believed that the levees and flood walls will be enough to hold back the storm surge from up to a category three hurricane.

More Ninth Ward Photos

Collapsed building or just debris?

There are a some people making coming back and living in FEMA trailers while rebuilding.

It's still mostly a ghost town. Grass and weeds are growing wild and tall. Some folks have complained that it is a home for rats and other vermin. Where's the Agent Orange when you need it?

Some photos in the Ninth Ward

I took a few photos in the Ninth Ward. They are either on North Robertson, one of the major routes through the Ninth Ward, or the block adjacent to N. Robertson St.

The owners of this two story house are rebuilding and planning on coming back

The house on the right has totally collapsed.

Another collapsed house adjacent to standing buildings.

More Chalmette photos

The Chase Bank is open. The building is still closed and boarded up but they are operating from a trailer in front of the bank building. See the customers in line?

Home Depot is open and now hiring. Firestone is still closed, however.

No Popeye's Fried Chicken yet.

And, no Papa John's Pizza.

Winston and Jackie Freeman's Chalmette house

Here are some photos of Winston and Jackie's house in Chalmette. It has been gutted and cleaned out and is ready for demolition. Just four more days and it will be a year since Katrina hit and caused so much destruction and the clean up is still goin on and will be for a long time to come.

Betty's New Job

Betty started her new job with Unified Recovery Group last week. URG is the company retained by St. Bernard Parish to pick up the refuse from Hurrican Katrina. (That's right! It's been a year and they are still picking up trash and refuse.) Today makes her second full week on the job. She had to go into the Parish council last week and she was introduced to everyone as "Betty The Trash Lady." Now ain't that a title?

Then and Now

The last few months I have been getting in touch with some of the men with whom I was in the U.S. Air Force 46 to 50 years ago. It has been interesting and has brought back many happy memories of the time I spent in the military. Many of the men remained in the Air Force and retired after 20 years or more of service.

The black and white picture is of and Lonnie Kyle Anthony and me. The photo was taken in the summer or fall of 1957 while we were stationed at NSA at Ft. Meade, Maryland. As I recall it, Kyle had a friend in Baltimore (I think) who was a photographer and we had the photo made while visiting with him.

The color photos below are more or less how we look in 2006. Not much has changed, has it?

Barry Turns 37

Well, Old Barry Lane Nicholson ain't no spring chicken any more.

He turned 37 on August 11, 2006. His birthday was celebrated on Saturday, August 12, 2006. Kristen, being the pervert that she is, ordered him a special birthday cake. It's not quite X-rated.
